5 Ways to Wellbeing: Small Steps That Can Make a Big Difference

Looking after your mental health doesn’t always mean making big changes. Often, it’s the small things we do regularly that help us feel more balanced, connected and able to cope when life gets busy or difficult.

The 5 Ways to Wellbeing are simple actions you can build into everyday life. They’re based on evidence about what helps people stay mentally well – and the best part is, you can start anywhere.

Here are some easy ideas to try this week.

Connect

Spending time with others helps us feel supported, understood and less alone. Even small moments of connection can lift our mood.

Try this:

  • Message or call someone you haven’t spoken to in a while – even a quick check-in counts
  • Arrange a short walk or coffee with a friend, colleague or neighbour
  • Join a local group, activity session or community event in Rotherham or Barnsley

Connection doesn’t have to be big or planned – sometimes it’s just saying hello.

Be Active

Movement can boost mood, improve sleep and help reduce stress. It doesn’t need to be intense exercise – gentle activity still makes a difference.

Try this:

  • Take a short walk around your local area or green space
  • Stretch or move between tasks if you spend long periods sitting
  • Try something new like a beginner fitness class, dance session or community activity

Moving your body is also a great way to reset your mind.

Take Notice

Paying attention to the present moment can help reduce overwhelm and increase calm. It’s about noticing what’s around you – and how you’re feeling.

Try this:

  • Spend a few minutes outside noticing sounds, colours or the weather
  • Take a mindful break from your phone or screen
  • Pause during the day to check in with yourself and how you’re feeling

Small pauses can create space when life feels busy.

Keep Learning

Learning something new can build confidence and give you a sense of progress and purpose.

Try this:

  • Try a new recipe, hobby or creative activity at home
  • Listen to a podcast or read about something you’re curious about
  • Sign up for a short course or workshop in your local area

Learning doesn’t have to be formal – curiosity is enough.

Give

Helping others can boost your own wellbeing as well as theirs. Acts of kindness – big or small – matter.

Try this:

  • Check in on someone who might be having a tough time
  • Volunteer your time or skills locally
  • Do something thoughtful for a friend, neighbour or colleague

Giving can help you feel more connected and valued.

Start Small – Start Where You Are

You don’t need to do all five at once. Even choosing one small step this week can help support your mental wellbeing.

At Rotherham and Barnsley Mind, we know everyone’s experience is different. If you need extra support, we’re here to help – whether that’s through groups, one-to-one support, or practical advice about looking after your mental health.

Sometimes the smallest steps are the ones that make the biggest difference.
